Apple Allows Old iPhone Models to Download Older Version of Apps

Tomorrow, we will all welcome the official release of iOS 7. This is great news for people who have newer devices like the iPod Touch 5th gen, the iPhone 5, and the iPad 4. However, not all Apple devices will support the latest firmware update.

For example, the iPhone 3GS is one of the older Apple devices that won’t get the update. This means that the new apps they can install have greatly diminished.

Now, the good news is Apple is now allowing users who have older iPhones, iPod Touch, and iPads to download the last compatible version of apps. This is definitely more convenient as it allows users to access the app—instead of simply letting the old iDevice gather dust.

There’s no official word yet from Apple regarding this news. This backwards compatibility feature was only discovered by a Reddit user and reported by The Verge.

Personally, I wasn’t able to try this as I no longer have an older Apple device. But people have been able to successfully install older versions of Instagram in their iPhone 3GS.

If you’re going to try this, let me know if this works for you!
